Our first casting workshop was not only a technical leap in the art of glass making but students were challenged conceptually as well. Given the geometric form of a star each student was presented with the problem of making this amorphous symbol into an original artwork. The approaches varied extensively, some students looked to patterns and formal patterns from their visual history. Other breathed organic life into the glass, creating a representational portrait of a starfish. Still others gently morphed objects from the urban landscape into a star.
