GlassRoots’ Model: Hilltop Artists in Residence

GlassRoots is modeled on the Hilltop Artists-in-Residence project founded in 1995 in Tacoma, Washington to provide youth with a pathway to self-sufficiency with new glassmaking skills. Hilltop offers street-smart, school-rejecting youth an avenue for self-expression—while emphasizing the values of self-discipline, cooperation and team-work. Given the inherent danger present in glassblowing, many at-risk youth find it “cool” to participate in such an activity, all the while quietly absorbing these important values that must be constantly reinforced in order to practice these activities safely and productively.

GlassRoots expanded the Hilltop model by adding a graphic design component which includes formal training in color, form, spatial concepts, communication design and computer skills—and a sequential entrepreneurial skills segment that develops an understanding for how one creates and operates a business. This skill-set parlays into career options and job opportunities everywhere.
