Noted African Beadmaker visits GlassRoots
Nomoda “Cedi” Djaba, wellknown Ghanaian glass bead artist, will visit the GlassRoots Studio, Newark, on Monday and Tuesday, June 15 and 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. Cedi will demonstrate Ghanaian beadmaking techniques to Newark youth involved in the glassmaking curriculum provided to Newark area young people already familiar with Venetian glass beadmaking skills.
Mr. Djaba presently runs Retado Bead Industry in Odenmasi-Krobo, Ghana. Having learned beamaking as a child from his grandfather, Cedi uses crushed glass powders in small ceramic molds to create an infinite variety of decorative beads and jewelry.
GlassRoots has provided glassmaking and business skills training to over 3,000 area youth since 2001. Most recently GlassRoots beadmakers demonstrated their skills at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Newark’s Branch Brook Park, as well as at Rutgers University’s Rutgers Day in New Brunswick in early May. These same youth will be demostrating at the Newark Museum’s Jazz in the Park series in July-August, 2009.
Mr. Djaba’s visit has been supported in part by the Reitman Foundation. Additional funding was provided by the NJ State Council on the Arts/Department of State, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and Victoria Foundation.
